The piers: walks above the bay

Places to stroll and set off across the bay.

In Arcachon, piers reach into the bay like balconies above the water. Thiers is a busy boarding point in town; other jetties serve boat trips, fishing or a pause to watch the tide.

Each pier has its own outlook: pinasses, sails and sandbanks appear with the water. Departures and access vary with conditions; follow local guidance.

Choosing your moment

The piers are easy places to watch the bay without going far from shore. As the tide falls, channels appear; at high water, boats seem to glide closer to the promenades. Morning and late-day light give façades and sails different character.

Strolling or boarding

Thiers is a convenient departure point for boat trips, but schedules vary through the year. Check the operator’s timetable and arrive early if boarding. For a walk, stay aware of anglers and other people using the pontoons.

Watch the water change the scene

A pier gives you a stable place from which to notice movement. Boats arrive and depart, the tide changes the width of the channels, and small details appear in the water that are hard to see from the promenade. Try looking back toward town as well as outward: the shoreline, roofs and trees form another useful map of where you are.

The piers are shared spaces, used by people fishing, boarding boats and taking a short walk. Leave room for others to pass and follow any signs around the boarding areas. If you plan to take a boat, check the exact departure point and allow time for queues or changes to the schedule. If you are simply strolling, a few minutes watching the tide can be enough.

A small pause with a wide view

You do not need a boat ticket or a long walk to feel the scale of the bay. From the end of a pier, the horizon opens and the shoreline becomes a sequence of villages, trees and landing places. Stay long enough to see a boat pass or the tide alter the water around the pilings; the view is less a picture than a scene in motion.

Conditions can be breezy, and surfaces may be wet, so take care near the edge. Keep fishing lines and boarding areas in mind as you move through the space. If you are photographing the view, step aside once you have your frame. A pier works best when everyone can pause there without interrupting the people using it for a practical purpose.
